Cornus

Cornus or Dogwood / Flowering Dogwood

There are 2 main types of dogwood when you first think of Cornus the first being the typical brightly colour nude stems that we all see come the autumn / winter months such as BatonRouge, these cannot be resisted by any gardener, they are grown for this very reason, they brighten up what is normally a very dull flower border this time of year.

Then you have the flowering dogwood (chinenis and florida) completely different to the above, these are grown for their unusual, attractive flowers. These ones really need to be centre of attention. Great autumn foliage colour as well.

Where to Site Your Cornus

Whether you opt for the dogwood or the flowering dogwood they are all idea for the small garden as well as adding great impact to the larger flower borders.

To get the best impact of the dogwood bush then plant a few of them together to really brighten the border. As for the flowering dogwood position them as a standalone shrub or where you can appreciate them in the flower border

How to Grow and Look After you Cornus

The flowering cherry prefers to be planted in acidic soil, ideally with the morning sun and afternoon shade.

The dogwood plant in well drained soil but can also tolerate damp conditions. To get the best colour in the stems then hard prune in March – April.
