Buxus, commonly known as boxwood, is a versatile evergreen shrub widely used in formal garden settings for hedges, borders, and topiary. It is well-loved for its dense, small, and glossy green leaves, which lend themselves well to shaping and pruning. Buxus is slow-growing, typically easy to maintain, and can be adapted to various garden styles, from traditional to modern.

  • Foliage: Dense, glossy, small oval leaves that stay green throughout the year.
  • Growth: Slow-growing and tolerant of frequent trimming; grows well in a range of shapes including balls, cones, and pyramids.
  • Size: Depending on the variety and pruning, mature plants can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet), though most topiaries are kept compact.
  • Flowers: Small, creamy-yellow, and fragrant flowers bloom in spring, which are subtle and add seasonal interest.

Growing Conditions:

  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Amend heavy clay soil for improved drainage.
  • Light: Prefers partial shade to full sun, though it does well in shadier spots. Too much direct sun, however, can cause leaf scorch.
  • Watering: Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Planting and Care Tips:

  • Pruning: Prune twice a year, ideally in spring and late summer, to maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Always use sharp, clean shears.
  • Feeding: Apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly for young plants and during dry spells. However, mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant.
  • Mulching: Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and control weeds, but keep mulch away from the stem to prevent rot.
