Eucalyptus Gunnii

Cider Gum, is an elegant, fast-growing evergreen tree that stands out for its distinctive silvery-blue foliage and aromatic leaves.

Eucalyptus gunnii – A Stunning Evergreen Tree with Fragrant Foliage and Attractive Silvery Leaves

Eucalyptus gunnii, commonly known as the Cider Gum, is an elegant, fast-growing evergreen tree that stands out for its distinctive silvery-blue foliage and aromatic leaves. Native to Tasmania, this tree can reach a height of 12m Plus when fully mature, making it a fantastic addition to larger gardens or as a specimen tree. Eucalyptus gunnii produces fragrant leaves that release a refreshing, minty scent when crushed, adding an aromatic element to the garden. Its smooth, peeling bark and beautiful foliage provide year-round interest, making it an excellent choice for creating focal points or windbreaks.

Why Grow Eucalyptus gunnii?

Fragrant Foliage – Eucalyptus gunnii is known for its aromatic leaves that release a refreshing, menthol-like scent when touched or crushed. The leaves add an extra sensory layer to the garden, making it a perfect choice for gardens where fragrance is desired.

Striking Silvery Leaves – The tree’s distinctive silvery-blue leaves are lance-shaped and grow in clusters along the branches. As the tree matures, the leaves transition from a juvenile, rounded shape to the more elongated adult form. The silvery foliage creates a beautiful contrast in the landscape, providing interest throughout the year.

Fast-Growing & Hardy – Eucalyptus gunnii is a fast-growing tree that can quickly establish itself in the garden. It is also quite hardy, able to tolerate a range of soil types and conditions. It can withstand drought, poor soil, and coastal conditions, making it an ideal choice for tough garden environments. The tree’s hardiness ensures it will thrive in many climates.

Unique Bark – The tree’s smooth, peeling bark adds to its visual appeal. As the bark sheds in patches, it reveals a striking combination of colors, including cream, pink, and reddish-brown hues. This unique feature gives Eucalyptus gunnii a beautiful, sculptural quality, especially in winter when the foliage has died back.

Versatile & Low Maintenance – Once established, Eucalyptus gunnii is a relatively low-maintenance tree. It requires minimal care and is tolerant of a range of soil types, including poor, dry, or sandy soils. Its fast growth and resilience make it a great option for creating a quick windbreak or privacy screen.

Perfect for Larger Gardens – Due to its size, Eucalyptus gunnii is better suited for larger gardens or landscapes where its towering height and broad canopy can be appreciated. It can also be used to create shade or as part of a woodland garden.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Eucalyptus gunnii thrives in full sun and will grow best when planted in a bright, sunny location. It is well-suited to open, exposed areas where it can stretch its limbs and reach its full potential. It can tolerate some light shade, especially in warmer climates, but full sun is ideal for optimal growth and fragrance.

Soil: Eucalyptus gunnii is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers well-drained soil but can tolerate moderately poor or dry conditions. The tree will perform best in slightly acidic to neutral soils, though it is highly adaptable. It is important to ensure the soil is not waterlogged, as the tree is sensitive to excessive moisture around its roots.

Watering: Water Eucalyptus gunnii regularly when newly planted to help establish its root system. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. However, during dry spells, providing deep watering will help encourage healthy growth. Be careful not to overwater, as the tree does not like standing water around its roots.

Fertilizing: This tree is not particularly needy when it comes to fertilization. However, applying a light, slow-release fertilizer in the spring can help support its growth during the growing season. Eucalyptus gunnii will thrive with organic matter in the soil, which can be added as mulch around the base of the tree.

Pruning & Maintenance: Eucalyptus gunnii generally requires little pruning, but it can be shaped in its early years to promote a strong, straight trunk. If used for hedge or screen purposes, light pruning may be needed to encourage dense growth. Remove any dead or damaged wood to maintain the health of the tree. Keep an eye on the tree’s shape and remove any competing branches if necessary.

Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and suppress weed growth. A 2–3 inch layer of bark or wood chips will work well. Avoid placing mulch directly against the trunk to prevent rot and fungal issues.

Protection from Pests and Diseases: Eucalyptus gunnii is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but it may occasionally be susceptible to eucalyptus gall wasp or fungal issues like rust. Regularly inspect the tree for any signs of pests or diseases. Good air circulation and proper spacing will help prevent many problems.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Eucalyptus gunnii pairs beautifully with other drought-tolerant or coastal plants that thrive in full sun. Combine it with lavender, rosemary, or ornamental grasses to create a low-maintenance, fragrant garden. Its silvery foliage provides an attractive backdrop for more colorful plants, such as vibrant perennials like echinacea or gaillardia.

In woodland or naturalistic gardens, Eucalyptus gunnii looks stunning alongside native shrubs or wildflowers, where its tall, elegant form can create a dramatic focal point. Its unique bark and foliage also pair well with evergreen shrubs like boxwood or yew, adding texture and contrast to the landscape.

The tree’s height and form also make it an ideal choice for creating vertical interest in larger gardens, where it can be used as a windbreak or a specimen tree to highlight its striking leaves and beautiful bark.

Eucalyptus gunnii’s combination of aromatic foliage, attractive bark, and fast growth make it a wonderful addition to any garden, particularly in areas where fragrance and low-maintenance plants are desired. Its versatility and stunning visual appeal make it a standout choice for gardeners seeking a hardy, unique tree.
