Anigozanthos – The Vibrant Kangaroo Paw: A Bold and Exotic Garden Gem

Anigozanthos, commonly known as Kangaroo Paw, is a striking and vibrant Australian native plant known for its unique, tubular flowers and bold colours. With blooms in shades of red, orange, yellow, and even green, Kangaroo Paw brings a splash of exotic beauty to gardens and landscapes. Its unusual flowers, resembling the paws of a kangaroo, make it a fascinating addition to any garden, whether used as a border plant, in containers, or as a focal point in a mixed planting scheme.

Beyond its stunning appearance, Anigozanthos is also appreciated for its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions, from dry, well-drained soils to coastal gardens, making it a highly versatile plant. With its long flowering season, Kangaroo Paw adds dynamic colour and interest, making it a must-have for both native plant enthusiasts and those looking to add some Australian flair to their garden.

Why Grow Anigozanthos?

  • Exotic, Colourful Blooms – The unique, tubular flowers in shades of red, yellow, orange, and green bring vibrant colour to the garden, attracting pollinators like birds and bees.
  • Drought Tolerant – Once established, Anigozanthos is drought-tolerant and thrives in dry, well-drained soils, making it perfect for water-wise gardens and low-maintenance landscapes.
  • Long Blooming Period – The flowers typically last from spring to summer, providing months of colour and visual interest in the garden.
  • Attracts Wildlife – The nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for birds, particularly Australian native species like honeyeaters, as well as bees and butterflies.
  • Architectural Appeal – With its upright, striking flower stalks and long, slender leaves, Anigozanthos adds an architectural and sculptural element to garden designs.

How to Grow Anigozanthos

  • Position – Anigozanthos thrives in full sun to light shade. For the best flower production and vibrant colours, plant it in a sunny location where it can receive at least six hours of sunlight each day.
  • Soil – Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It’s ideal for sandy, loamy, or rocky soils but can adapt to most well-draining garden soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, as it may cause root rot.
  • Watering – While drought-tolerant once established, regular watering is important during the plant's first year of growth. Once settled in, water deeply during dry spells, but ensure the soil is allowed to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
  • Fertilizing – Feed Anigozanthos with a low-phosphorus fertilizer designed for Australian natives or a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer in spring, just before the growing season begins.
  • Pruning & Maintenance – Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage new blooms. After flowering, cut back spent stems to keep the plant tidy and promote fresh growth. Trim any damaged or dead leaves as necessary.
  • Hardy level 2: tolerant of low temperatures, but not surviving being frozen (1 to 5)

Perfect Plant Combinations Anigozanthos pairs well with other Australian natives such as Grevillea, Callistemon, or Banksia, which share similar growing conditions and complement its bold flowers. For a striking contrast, pair it with grasses like Pennisetum or Festuca, whose fine textures highlight the sculptural nature of Kangaroo Paw.

It also works beautifully in mixed borders with plants like Echinacea, Daylilies, or Sedum, where its vibrant blooms add a punch of colour against more subdued foliage. In container gardens, Anigozanthos can be combined with trailing plants like Petunias or Lobelia, creating a dynamic, layered display of texture and colour.
