Cimicifuga (Actaea) ‘Queen of Sheba’ – Bold Foliage & Scented Spires for Late-Season Drama

Cimicifuga (Actaea) ‘Queen of Sheba’ is a striking herbaceous perennial that brings elegance and late-season interest to borders and woodland gardens. Known for its finely cut, deep purple-bronze foliage and tall, graceful spires of fragrant pale pink-white flowers, this variety creates a dramatic vertical accent from late summer into autumn. Ideal for part shade, it adds movement, texture, and subtle fragrance to the garden when many other plants have faded.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring – Rich, dark foliage emerges, offering contrast to surrounding greens.
  • Summer – Foliage deepens in tone; upright flower buds begin to form.
  • Autumn – Long, bottlebrush-style flower spikes bloom, attracting pollinators and swaying gently in the breeze.
  • Winter – Dies back naturally, returning with fresh growth in spring.

Structure & Form

  • Height: Reaches 1 – 1.5m tall in flower.

  • Spread: Around 0.5 - 1m wide.

  • Foliage: Deeply divided, bronze-purple leaves provide striking contrast in mixed plantings.

  • Flowers: Slender, upright spires of soft pinkish-white blooms with a sweet, pleasant fragrance.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Shady Borders & Woodland Gardens – Thrives in dappled light or partial shade.

  • Mixed Herbaceous Plantings – Adds structure and colour contrast.

  • Late-Season Interest – Blooms when most perennials are fading.

  • Pollinator-Friendly Gardens – Flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Best in partial shade; tolerates morning sun if soil stays moist.

  • Soil: Prefers humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK.

  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; remove spent flower stems and tidy up in late winter.

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially in hot weather.

Why Choose ‘Queen of Sheba’?

  • Striking Dark Foliage – Creates bold contrast in shade gardens.
  • Fragrant, Elegant Flowers – Tall, scented spires bloom in late summer.
  • Perfect for Shade – Thrives in less sunny spots where colour is needed.
  • Pollinator-Friendly – A magnet for bees and butterflies.
