Brunnera macrophylla 'Alexanders Great'

Great Forget-me-not

Brunnera Alexanders Great – Stunning Groundcover with Beautiful Spring Blooms

The Brunnera alexander's Great, available in a 2-litre pot, is a perennial that offers both beauty and functionality to your garden. Known for its heart-shaped leaves and bright blue flowers, this plant provides year-round visual interest, particularly in shaded and woodland gardens. Ideal as groundcover, it offers a striking contrast against darker foliage and is perfect for filling in garden spaces with lush, vibrant greenery.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: Vibrant blue flowers emerge in early spring, resembling forget-me-nots, creating a striking contrast against the bold foliage.
  • Summer: The large, silvery-green leaves maintain a lush appearance, thriving in shaded or semi-shaded areas, perfect for filling garden beds.
  • Autumn: Leaves turn a richer, darker green, providing a full, consistent display of foliage throughout the fall.
  • Winter: As a deciduous perennial, Brunnera’s foliage dies back in winter, leaving a clean, tidy garden bed until spring.

Structure & Form

  • Height & Spread: Grows to a height of 0.1 - 0.5m, with a spread of up to 0.5 - 1m, making it a perfect choice for groundcover or edging.
  • Foliage: The heart-shaped leaves are silvery with green veins, giving the plant a unique, variegated look that enhances the texture of your garden.
  • Flowers: Small, bright blue flowers emerge in clusters, creating a striking, eye-catching display in spring.
  • Form: Dense, spreading growth that fills in garden gaps, offering both visual appeal and natural coverage.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Woodland & Shade Gardens: Thrives in shaded or partially shaded areas, making it an excellent choice for woodland or under-canopy planting.
  • Groundcover: Perfect for creating a lush, green carpet under trees or shrubs, filling in gaps with its low-growing foliage.
  • Borders & Edging: Ideal for planting along the edges of flower beds, walkways, or garden paths for year-round texture and colour.
  • Mixed Plantings: Combine with other shade-loving plants like ferns, hostas, or astilbes to create a vibrant, diverse planting scheme.
  • Naturalistic Gardens: Beautiful in more informal or wildlife gardens, providing soft, bright flowers and dense, spreading foliage.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Prefers part to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sunlight. Avoid planting in areas with full afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil, particularly in rich, humus-filled or slightly acidic soils.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy, ideal for colder climates, and able to withstand a variety of weather conditions.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance – this plant does not require frequent pruning, just occasional removal of dead leaves or spent flower heads.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the warmer months, as Brunnera prefers a damp environment.
  • Feeding: A light feed with compost or organic mulch in early spring will help boost growth and ensure a healthy, lush appearance.
