Sorbus Aucuparia

Rowan

Sorbus aucuparia, commonly known as the Rowan, Mountain Ash, is a deciduous tree native to the UK. It is popular for its ornamental appeal, with attractive white spring flowers, bright red or orange autumn berries, and vibrant autumn foliage. The Rowan is also valued for its ecological role, providing food for birds and other wildlife.

  • Leaves: The leaves are pinnate, meaning they are divided into multiple leaflets. Each leaf typically has 9-15 leaflets, giving it a delicate and feathery appearance. The leaves are green during the growing season, turning to brilliant shades of yellow, orange, or red in autumn, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.
  • Flowers: In late spring (May to June), the tree produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers, which are mildly fragrant. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators.
  • Fruits: After flowering, the tree produces small, round berries (botanically called pomes). The berries are usually bright red or orange, creating a striking contrast against the green or autumnal leaves. The berries appear in late summer to early autumn and often persist into winter, providing a valuable food source for birds, including thrushes and waxwings.
  • Bark: The bark is smooth and grayish-brown when young, becoming more fissured with age, though it remains relatively smooth compared to other trees
  • Height: Typically reaches 8-15 meters in height, though it can grow taller in optimal conditions.
  • Shape: It has an upright, slender form, which makes it suitable for small gardens and urban environments.

Sorbus aucuparia prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. However, flowering and berry production are best in sunny positions. Thrives in a wide range of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, as long as they are well-drained. Tolerates poor soils and can even thrive in somewhat rocky or exposed locations, making it a good choice for upland areas. Fully hardy, thriving in both lowland and upland areas. It can withstand cold winter temperatures and is resilient to frost. Pruning is generally not necessary but can be done in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches and maintain shape. Removing spent flowers can enhance the appearance of the tree and encourage healthy growth, though this is not required.

  • Due to its moderate size and upright form, Sorbus aucuparia is suitable for smaller gardens, adding height without taking up too much space.
  • Its tolerance to pollution and compact shape make it ideal for urban and street planting.
  • The flowers and berries attract a wide range of wildlife, including pollinators and birds, making it perfect for natural or wildlife-friendly gardens.
