Azalea Japonica Johanna

Japanese Azalea

Azalea japonica 'Johanna' is a striking, evergreen shrub known for its rich, deep red flowers and beautiful dark green foliage that turns a reddish-bronze in winter. This compact, slow-growing azalea is ideal for UK gardens, particularly for those looking to add vibrant color in spring. It is well-suited for borders, containers, or woodland settings, offering a burst of color and year-round interest.

Key Characteristics:

  • Foliage: 'Johanna' features glossy, dark green leaves that create a dense, bushy habit. In winter, the foliage often takes on a bronze to reddish-purple hue, providing seasonal interest even after the blooms have faded.
  • Flowers: The standout feature of Azalea 'Johanna' is its large, funnel-shaped flowers in a vivid deep red. These blooms appear in late spring (typically May) and last for several weeks, creating a striking contrast against the dark foliage.
  • Size: This compact shrub typically grows to about 60-90 cm (2-3 feet) in height and spread, making it ideal for smaller gardens, patios, or as a low-maintenance border plant.

Growing Conditions:

  • Soil: Like most azaleas, 'Johanna' thrives in acidic, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. If your garden soil is more alkaline, consider growing it in containers with ericaceous compost.
  • Light: Prefers partial shade, especially in areas that receive morning sun and afternoon shade. Too much direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch, but it will flower less in deep shade.
  • Watering: Regular watering is important, particularly in dry periods, to maintain consistently moist (but not waterlogged) soil. It prefers moisture-retentive soil that is not too heavy.

Uses:

  • Borders & Shrub Beds: This compact shrub works well in mixed borders or as part of a shrub bed, where its vibrant red flowers can add drama to the landscape.
  • Containers: 'Johanna' is an excellent choice for container planting, especially if your garden has alkaline soil, allowing you to control its growing conditions.
  • Woodland Gardens: Its preference for partial shade and rich, organic soils makes it ideal for woodland-style gardens.
  • Foundation Planting: Due to its evergreen nature and compact size, 'Johanna' is also suitable for planting near foundations or along walkways.
