Skimmia

These are fantastic, evergreen shrubs, that offer all year-round interest. There are male and female varieties.

The male has glossy dark green foliage, they hold deep coloured flower buds all winter that open to delicate flowers for spring. Whilst the female varieties do this, they also have a bright juicy red berry that sometimes does no look real.

You do need one male to pollinate a group of female skimmias.

Male Varieties such as Kew Green / Fragrans / Rubella.

Female Varieties such as Nymans / Veitchii.

Self-fertile varieties such as Reevesiana / Veitchii

How to Grow and Look after your Skimma

Skimmia require moist fertile acidic soil – if you don’t add a bag of ericaceous compost. They prefer full shade or partial shade but can tolerate full sun.

They need a general-purpose acidic fertiliser and this is to be added in spring,
