Pyrus

Pyrus or Pear trees

Are very long lived, sometimes living up to 250 years and they have been around for a long time. They have been grown in gardens and orchards throughout much of the UK since AD 995, with many cultivars now in existence. They are deciduous trees with oval green leaves that usually have fantastic Autumn colour and scented white flowers in spring, followed by green or brown fruits which are edible in some species.

Where to site your Pyrus

Depending on the species, these trees can be medium or large so some varieties are well suited for smaller gardens. Probably best planted somewhere with plenty space to grow such as the back of the garden or as a standalone feature in the middle, preferably somewhere you can easily access the fruit to harvest on the edible species.

How to grow and look after your Pyrus

Pyrus are easy to grow and but are best suited to a sunny location with ordinary-to-rich, drained soil
